Oscars, why do we care?

Why are Oscars such a big deal? Because of who cares… but why do we care? Is it a true measure of the best films of all time or just the best of Hollywood? How does a film get to win Best Picture? By lobbying or through clever marketing ploys?

One of the reasons I care is that most of the films that win an Oscar are consistently good films. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak. However, there are notable exceptions to this ie Shakespeare in Love and Gwyneth Paltrow! I mean, anyone can play a cross dressing Shakespearean character… it’s really no stretch.

At Oscar time, there’s always controversy being stirred up in the media about the kind of press each film is getting, like it matters… and it seems like it does! Each production studio tries to get some dirt on the opposition before the votes are received to sway the judges’ decision. I wonder how objective they are when they can be influenced this way.

The people who make the ultimate decisions are the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a group of over 5,000 industry professionals ranging from Actors to Producers and Writers. They are sent nominations ballots to mull over and then send in their vote to PriceWaterhouseCoopers, an international accounting firm. Then once the nominations are announced they send in their final votes, back to the secret, locked down offices of PriceWaterhouse for the final tally. The Academy claims that it has set strict guidelines for the studios to follow so they don’t try any funny stuff, but you know those in the biz, where there’s a will, there’s a way! Loop holes a-go-go! You betcha!

Then the red carpet is hung out and beaten before it is laid at the feet of the rich, oh-so-talented and glamourous and we take up our usual spot on the indentation on our couches, sit back and watch it all happen again! Jealous? Never!

We care about the Oscars because, they are the Oscars! Those at the top of the entertainment biz care so we care. They turn up, so we watch. They cry and we cry. They fluff their lines and say outrageous things and we laugh. It is entertaining and time efficient. Think of all the bad movies you could have watched if it wasn’t for the Oscar people telling us what to watch!
