If the Oscars are entertaining, why not have a look at the Golden Raspberry Awards(or the Razzies)? The worst film of all time is almost as controversial as the best, don’t ya think?
It all started in the 80’s as all good film things did. We can blame the Razzies on John Wilson all round film guy. This fella got sick of all the hype and hoopla of the Oscars and wanted to celebrate or highlight the worst in film. And why not? Bad films can be just as entertaining as the good. It helps us little people feel powerful and gives us a little laugh. You mean film people get it wrong too? You betcha!
A Razzie Award winner gets a $4.97 trophy in the shape of, you guessed it, a raspberry. The ceremony itself occurs the day before the Oscars. Wilson used to have a potluck dinner on this day which morphed into a tongue-in-cheek dig at the worst movies of all time! One year he popped on a tuxedo invited a few more people and the Razzies were born. In 2011, The Razzies are into their 31st year, televised on CNN and include categories such as, “] Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property”, “Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie” and “Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D” as well as “Worst Picture”, “Worst Prequel, Remake , Rip-off or Sequel” and “Worst New Star”.
The first film to win the Razzie was Can’t Stop the Music (1980) starring Steve Guttenberg, Valerie Perrine and Bruce Jenner. Yep and it’s a musical comedy! I can hear the groans from here. There’s disco, Steve Guttenberg and a vague reference to The Village People. Uh huh! Sounds like a deserving Razzie winner to us!
Ultimately the Razzies are all about keeping filmmakers on their toes and poking fun at those who dish out rubbish. Next time Oscar season comes upon us, let us pause to enjoy the really bad films as well as the stunners!
